I have found that one of the best places to find great homeschool resources is, you guessed it – the internet! There are thousands of educational websites just begging for you to come download and print their free worksheets, science project ideas, and coloring pages. Not to mention all the great homeschool blogs with step-by-step directions and free print-outs. And hello, have you SEEN Pinterest? A creative person could probably homeschool without spending a dime on textbooks and workbook pages, just by taking advantage of all the free resources online.
But all those awesome websites mean absolutely nothing if you have no way of printing them out, right? A good printer is pretty important in a homeschool household. But how do you choose?
First, do you need to print in color?
I’ll be honest with you, we rarely printed anything in color on our old inkjet printer. We received it for free as part of an office rebate, but unfortunately, the ink cartridges ran out almost before we received our rebate check in the mail. Imagine the sticker shot when we went to purchase the cartridges for our free printer – $30-$50 and up. Say what!?
You can see here, how many pages each type of cartridge is projected to yield. For the cost, it’s highly unimpressive. So if you’re like me and printing in color isn’t a big deal to you, just say no to inkjet printers. In my honest opinion, they are a complete and total waste of money. Even when the printer was free.
Several years ago, after buying only the black inkjet cartridges over and over, we finally discovered laser printers. Laser printers are typically used to print text documents and business graphics. They’re fast and economical.
We own the older version of this Brother Laser Printer and couldn’t be happier with it. It’s wireless and can print two-sided documents. This comes in especially handy when you want to save on paper. But the greatest thing about it is how many pages it can print with just one toner cartridge. The starter toner cartridge that comes with it will print several hundred pages, but a full-size cartridge will prints upwards of 2,000 documents before it runs out!
How much is this going to cost?
It depends. If you go with the name brand version like this Brother Printer High Yield Toner Cartridge you’ll pay about $50 for 2600 pages.
That’s a lot better than 480 pages for $30, right? But wait…it gets better.
I’ll tell you a secret. Are you ready? I have never, ever, EVER bought a name brand toner cartridge. Instead, I have paid about $10-20 for generic no-name brand cartridges.
And guess what? They work!!
We have only had wonderful results ordering generic toner cartridges on Amazon. This 2 Pack Laser Toner Cartridges will yield approximately 2600 pages per cartridge and is an awesome deal. Seriously, don’t be afraid to buy a generic cartridge! We’ve bought several and never had an issue.
I hope this post has been helpful for you! I love finding great homeschool printables and coloring pages online and knowing that I’m not breaking the bank is a great feeling. So, do yourself a favor and ditch the old inkjet printer and embrace printing everything in black-and-white! 🙂
Until next time!
